The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), in coordination with the Senegalese National Commission for UNESCO/ISESCO, will organize a regional workshop to explore the implementation mechanisms of the OIC Media Strategy in Countering Islamophobia and publicize Islam’s middle stance among African countries in Dakar, Republic of Senegal, on 16-17 October 2017.

The workshop will be held as part of the implementation of OIC/ISESCO cooperation activities scheduled for 2017/2018 with the aim of training media professionals and their institutions in African Member States on countering Islamophobia and redressing stereotypes about Islam and Muslims in professional and rational ways without resorting to emotions or fanaticism.

The workshop aims to introduce the OIC Media Strategy and ISESCO’s Programme for Training Media Professionals on Redressing Stereotypes about Islam and Muslims; develop cooperation mechanisms between media training institutions in African countries to contribute to outlining the broad lines of an executive action plan for training media professionals in African countries and developing their capacities to produce media contents that present the true image of Islam and counter the speech of violence, extremism and zealotry.

During this workshop, participants will present the experiences of African media training institutes in training on dialogue techniques and publicizing Islam’s middle stance and coexistence; study the academic mechanisms for countering Islamophobia and redressing stereotypes about Islam; review requirements for communication and cooperation between media institutions in African countries to counter Islamophobia; and examine ways of curtailing speech of hate, fanaticism and discrimination against Muslims.

The workshop will bring together a host of officials of institutes and schools of media training from Togo, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger, Mali, Gabon, Cameroon, Benin, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania and Morocco. Also in attendance will be Ambassador Cheikhou Oumar Seck, Director of the COMIAC Coordination Office, and Dr Abdelhamid Salhi, representative of the OIC Information Department.
