ISESCO Director General calls for protecting rare manuscripts in Timbuktu

The Director General of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, called for protecting the rare manuscripts in Ahmad Baba al-Tumbukti Center in Timbuktu, which was seized by Azwad rebels, in the Republic of Mali.

In a communiqué, ISESCO Director General said that those rare manuscripts are invaluable scientific and cultural wealth and a human heritage that should be preserved and not be neglected or left for theft or destruction.

He also underlined the necessity for UNESCO, which included Timbuktu in the World Heritage List, to intervene and prevent the loss of such rare manuscripts that touch upon different fields of knowledge.

Furthermore, he highlighted that Ahmad Baba al-Tumbukti Center in Timbuktu is one of the pre-eminent centers in the African continent, for it includes hundreds of priceless and rare manuscripts on science, culture, Sharia, humanities and applied sciences, which emphasize the scientific and literary wealth of the Islamic civilization throughout history.
