PREFACE

Most of the opinions that deal with matters of doctrine in Islam do not take into consideration certain assessments and reflections which could, otherwise, lead to a real change in ideas and currents and to a clearer and more complete view of Islam in so far as doctrine is concerned.

While some scholars are concerned only with the general Picture without detailed specification, others get deeper into details without giving due attention to the general picture. Out of this, tendencies grow that either go too far in prohibition and forbiddance or become extremely permissive.

As for the middle course, the one supposed to create balance and case in social life, it cannot be achieved except through rigorous research, without fear of accusation or blame. It is therefore incumbent upon the 'Ulema, the teachers, and the social assistants to educate the Muslim society and make its behaviour moderate and balanced.

We think therefore that the question of sculpture and the making of statues should be divided into the three following subjects :

The First Subject : the Sharia' texts that deal with sculpture and the making of statues.

The Second Subject : a reflection on the practical opinions of the Blessed Companions.

The Third Subject : theoretical principles and practical analogies.
